Inspired by the movie Hidden Figures, PepsiCo and 21st Century Fox partnered to find the next generation of women who will lead the way in STEM. Our search invited real-life women and girls who had yet to be recognized for their great work or potential in STEM to share their stories and compete for $50,000 to put toward education or research, and more. From a total of 7,000 applicants, our judges selected two grand prize winners, featured below:

Professional Winner

Joy Buolamwini

Joy Buolamwini founded the Algorithmic Justice League to fight bias in machine learning. She's a social impact technologist, filmmaker, speaker & poet of code based at MIT.

High School Winner

Yuna Shin

Yuna Shin is a junior at Henry M. Jackson High School. She uses her creativity through STEM as a Washington Aerospace Scholar and instructor for Girls Rock in Science and Math to empower others.

Runners-Up

  • Christine Liu

    Christine Liu is a PhD candidate in Neuroscience at Berkeley and makes art to communicate science.

  • Sydney-Alyce Bourget

    Sydney-Alyce Bourget is a junior at the University of Georgia majoring in Ecology.

  • Maria Patterson

    Maria Patterson is a big data astronomer and open science architect. Streaming live updates from the Universe to you.

  • Midori Maeda

    Midori Maeda is a polymer engineer making new biomaterials for tissues. Latina from Chicago, incoming Ph.D. student.

  • Jami Mulgrave

    Jami Mulgrave is a Statistics PhD student at NC State and NSF Fellow. She is a Columbia graduate and singer-songwriter.

  • London Ruff

    London Ruff is a Geology major from CA attending the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

  • Rona Wang

    Rona Wang is a freshman at MIT studying mathematics with computer science. Outside of STEM, she is interested in literature and activism.

  • Shannon Yan

    Shannon Yan stars in the YouTube show “My Code”, teaches kids computer science in her community, and is a Girls Who Code alumni.

  • Margaret (Meg) Richey

    Meg Richey is from Virginia and is passionate about STEM and developing wearable medical devices.

  • Emmaline Ekstrand

    Emmaline is 13 and attends Immaculata Catholic School in Durham, NC. The oldest of five, she loves ice hockey & lacrosse.

Prizes

2 Grand Prize Winners Each Received:

  • $50,000 to put toward education or research
  • A 3-day trip to Orlando, FL
  • 4 movie tickets to Hidden Figures
  • Membership to the New York Academy of Sciences or admittance to the Junior Academy of the New York Academy of Sciences
  • Access to bootcamp material from the Junior Academy of the New York Academy of Sciences

10 Runners-Up Each Received:

  • $10,000 to put toward education or research
  • Hometown screening of Hidden Figures
  • Membership to the New York Academy of Sciences or admittance to the Junior Academy of the New York Academy of Sciences
  • Access to bootcamp material from the Junior Academy of the New York Academy of Sciences
